From Iceland — Tourists Stuck In SUV All Weekend

Tourists Stuck In SUV All Weekend

Published July 8, 2013

While many tourists in Iceland may feel like they’ve spent long expanses of time behind the wheel of a rental car or in the seat of a tour bus while trying to maximize ground covered and sites seen, one American couple literally spent the weekend in their SUV.
As RÚV reports, the couple attempted to drive a route that passes between Sprengisandur and Eyjafjörður on Friday evening and found themselves stranded in a bad storm. They waited in the vehicle from Friday evening until Sunday morning when they decided the weather had let up enough to try their luck on foot. Another driver soon spotted the pair and drove them to Akureyri, where they met with rescuers who later retrieved the stranded car.
The route they were attempting to drive had already been closed and declared impassable, according to Akureyri police. So, if you’re a tourist and you don’t feel like spending your vacation trapped in your car waiting out a storm, maybe consider heeding all road signs and closures.
