From Iceland — Winter Storms Hit Northern Iceland

Winter Storms Hit Northern Iceland

Published March 4, 2013

While we in the Reykjavík area may be complaining this morning about the blistering cold winds assaulting the city, residents of North and Northwest Iceland are contending with some brutal winter storms that are battering the region in snow and high winds.
The weather forecasts for the West Fjörds and across the north of the country will call for ongoing storms and winds upward of 20 metres per second, RÚV reports. The storm made landfall in the West Fjörds on Sunday. Ingvar Jakobsson, Ísafjörður Chief of Police, noted to RÚV that the wind is very strong and visibility is quite low in the area.
While there had not been much snowfall at the time of the storm first arriving in the North West, black ice was being reported on roads throughout the region so everybody should be cautious if taking to the roads.
