From Iceland — Bus Passengers Cross 10 Million Mark

Bus Passengers Cross 10 Million Mark

Published January 22, 2013

Over ten million people used the capital area bus service in 2012, showing a sharp increase in passengers between last year and the year previous.
A final tally of total bus passengers for 2012 conducted by Strætó hf. shows that over ten million people rode the bus last year, making this the company’s most successful year to date. Over one million passengers took the bus in October 2012 alone, Vísir reports, which is an increase of 11.9% from 2011.
The sharp increase in passengers might be attributed to expanded bus service, which went into effect in May of last year.
An agreement between local municipalities and the Icelandic government was signed last spring, wherein the government agreed to provide 1.25 billion ISK over the next ten years to improve area bus service. These improvements included having many routes starting service earlier and ending later, as well as running more frequently during rush hour.
