From Iceland — Hackers Taking Direct Approach

Hackers Taking Direct Approach

Published November 8, 2012

Police are warning the general public about another wave of criminals attempting to directly access people’s computers, with the user’s own help.
Vísir reports that a few people in Iceland so far have received phone calls from people claiming to work for Microsoft. This supposed Microsoft employee then claims that they have information which indicates that the would-be victim’s computer has been compromised by malware.
From here, the user is asked for sensitive information which could allow the person over the phone to have direct access to their computer.
Police remind the general public that this is not how tech support works. Furthermore, it is not the policy of Microsoft to engage in such pro-active anti-virus efforts. A similar attempt was made earlier this year, without anyone being accessed. If you get such a call, it is advised instead that you alert the police at once.
It is not yet known if anyone has fallen for the hoax.
