Most Popular Names Tallied

Published September 18, 2012

The most popular girl and boy names for 2011 have been tallied, and they still do not replace the most popular Icelandic names of all time.
According to data compiled by Statistics Iceland, Vísir reports, for the year 2011 the most popular boy name was Aron, and the most popular girl name was Emilía. They were also the most popular in 2010.
Icelanders typically name their children with first and middle names, and these were tallied as well. The most popular middle names for boys were Ingi and Freyr, while for girls it was María and Ósk, with Rós in third place.
However, when the population is viewed as a whole, different names rise to the top of the list.
In men’s names, the three most popular first names in Iceland are Jón, Sigurður and Guðmundur. Among women, they are Guðrún, Anna and Sigríður. When middle names are taken into account, the top men’s names are Jón Þór, Gunnar Þór and Jón Ingi, and the top women’s names are Anna María, Anna Margrét and Anna Kristín.
