From Iceland — Polar Bear Still Unfound

Polar Bear Still Unfound

Published July 6, 2012

The polar bear spotted in north Iceland the other day has still not been found, and the likelihood that it ever will be is decreasing.
As reported, a polar bear has been spotted by Italian tourists just north of Vatnsnes, in north Iceland. The tourists apparently took photos and recorded a video of the bear, and showed it to some Icelanders living in Geitafell. In the course of the search, conducted by both the Coast Guard and police from Blönduós, polar bear tracks were spotted in the area. Blönduós chief of police Kristján Þorbjörnsson has advised people living in the area to stay indoors until the animal has been found.
The bear has still not been found, and the search resumes today at noon, employing a Coast Guard helicopter and a sniper. Those living in the area are still advised to be wary of heading out of doors.
Not everyone is so optimistic that the bear will even be found. Vísir reports that Kjartan Sveinsson, who runs a seal watching tour in Hvammstangi, told reporters yesterday that “it’s more likely to win the lottery than to find the polar bear today.” He pointed out that polar bears can swim up to six miles an hour, and if it has not been found by now, has in all likelihood taken to the sea to swim back to Greenland.
