From Iceland — Blood Donations Needed For Christmas

Blood Donations Needed For Christmas

Published December 20, 2011

The Blood Bank is calling upon people of all blood types to make donations, in the hopes of stocking up for Christmas and New Years.
While there seldom seems to be a surplus of blood donations, the holiday season is unfortunately a time of increased demand for them. This year is no exception, Vísir reports, as the blood bank is seeking donations from people of all blood types.
“There is a great need for blood at the hospitals, and it’s natural to go through some 200 to 300 units in a single weekend,” said Jón Þorsteinn Sigurðsson of the Blood Donors’ Society of Iceland. “That’s why it’s important that there’s enough blood for the upcoming Christmas weekend.” As the Blood Bank will be closed on Friday and opening again on Tuesday, hospitals need to be well-stocked.
Jón is hoping to achieve the goal of having 600 to 700 units available this weekend, pointing out that all it takes is one accident with a few injured to clear out the usual quota for the weekend.
The Blood Bank is located on Snorrabraut 60, and is open from 11:00 to 19:00 today, 8:00 to 15:00 tomorrow and Wednesday, and 8:00 to 19:00 on Thursday. You can also visit their site or call 543-5500 for more information.
