Akureyri Winter Festival Begins

Published February 10, 2011

Akureyri’s annual Éljagangur winter festival begins this evening with a full schedule of events lasting until Sunday when the festival winds down.
Everyone is welcome to attend this evening’s opening ceremony, which begins at 19 with a snow obstacle course. The mayor of Akureyri has been specially invited to show everyone what she is made of, according to a press release from the festival organizers.
Following the snow obstacle course, there will be an organized flashlight walk on Hlíðarfjall mountain. All of the lights on the mountain will be turned off, leaving only the illumination of flashlights.
Other events include, but are not limited to, snow sled races, a motor cross competition on ice, and snowmobile trips.
Admission to the festival is free. More information is available in Icelandic at www.eljagangur.is. Additionally, festival spokesman Birkir Siguðsson can be reached at kynning@eljagangur.is or 893 7917.
