From Iceland — Karaoke For Nature

Karaoke For Nature

Published December 23, 2010

A karaoke marathon will be held to drum up the remaining signatures needed on a petition to put Iceland’s natural resources in public ownership legislatively.
Entitled “The Voice of the People”, the marathon will take place at the Nordic House on 6-8 January. The organisers – which include artist Björk Guðmundsdóttir and others behind the petition on orkuaudlindir.is – encourage everyone to take part in what very well may be “the largest karaoke in Icelandic history”.
The purpose of the event is to draw even more signatures to the petition, which reads simply, “Iceland’s natural resources should by law be in the ownership of the people.” Already 20,000 people have signed the petition, but the target is 35,000.
The organisers stress that everyone – professional or amateur alike – is invited to take part in this event. More information on the particulars will be forthcoming after the new year, but if you have an interest in taking part, now would be the time to start practicing.
On a related note, almost every single candidate who was voted into the constitutional assembly also supports making Iceland’s natural resources publicly owned.
