Big Changes in the Government Pending

Published September 1, 2010

According to sources close to Fréttablaðið, a number of ministers are on their way out – and some new faces are coming in – as a part of the reorganization plan designed to save money and increase efficiency.
The sources claim that Minister of Economics and Business Gylfi Magnússon and Minister of Justice Ragna Árnadóttir will be leaving the government this week. Minister of Transport and Communications Kristján L. Möller as well as Minister of Health Álfheiður Ingadóttir will also be departing.
At the same time, Leftist-Green MP Ögmundur Jónasson will take on the newly-created position of Minister of the Interior, which would oversee the work previously done by the ministries of transport, communication and justice. It is not yet known which Social Democrat will then be brought in, but the sources maintain that Oddný G. Harðardóttir is a likely candidate.
Minister of Social Affairs Árni Páll Árnason will add to his workload by taking on the duties of the previous ministry of health, under the new title of Minister of Social Welfare.
Jón Bjarnason will remain Minister of Fishing and Agriculture and Katrín Júlíusdóttir will also remain Minister of Industry for the time being, until such time as the Ministry of Employment is established, which will cover both of their duties.
The government will be meeting today and tomorrow to finalize these changes.
