From Iceland — Conservative Chairman Will Not Ask MP to Resign

Conservative Chairman Will Not Ask MP to Resign

Published June 7, 2010

Independence Party chairman Bjarni Benediktsson told reporters that he does not intend to ask fellow conservative MP Guðlaugur Þór Þórðarson to resign from parliament for accepting 25 million in campaign finance contributions.
Guðlaugur Þór accepted the millions from a number of private companies, among them Baugur, FL Group and Fons. Only last month, Social Democrat MP Steinunn Valdís Óskarsdóttir resigned for accepting campaign finance contributions totalling only about half the amount Guðlaugur Þór took.
Bjarni explained away the idea of Guðlaugur Þór resigning, saying that people are making too much of his finances, adding that Guðlaugur Þór isn’t running for chairmanship of the party anyway.
