From Iceland — Editor Leaves Morgunbladid Due to SIC Report Coverage

Editor Leaves Morgunbladid Due to SIC Report Coverage

Published April 30, 2010

Gunnhildur Arna Gunnarsdóttir, previously the evening news editor at Morgunblaðið, left the newspaper due to their front page coverage of the Special Investigative Commission (SIC) report.
Speaking to the news website Smugan, Gunnarsdóttir said that she did not understand why the front page coverage of the SIC report lay emphasis entirely at the feet of Iceland’s banks, and not with any politicians.
As previously reported, former Central Bank chairman and current Morgunblaðið editor Davíð Oddsson was heavily criticized by the report, and his name features among the most prominently of any individual named in the report. It has also been Oddsson’s position that the crash occurred because the banks lied about what was going on behind closed doors.
Gunnarsdóttir, who while respecting the opinion of Haraldur Johannessen – who made the decision about the front page at that time – believed the slant was completely different from the way she saw the story, and thought it best to tender her resignation.
