Today is former president Vigdís Finnbogadóttir’s 80th birthday. Happy Birthday Vigdís! You rock!
Thirty years ago, Vigdís became the first female democratically elected head of state. Vigdís was Iceland’s fourth president and served from 1980 to 1996.
Vigdís welcomed everyone to join her today at the University of Iceland for a program of celebrations, which started this morning with Vigdís being awarded an honorary doctorate from the Faculty of Foreign Languages, Literature and Linguistics of the University’s School of Humanities.
In addition to today’s coffee and light refreshments, The Vigdís Finnbogadóttir Institute of Foreign Languages at the University of Iceland will kick off a three-day conference this evening called Preserving the Future: Sustainability of Language, Culture and Nature.
We send Vigdís warm congratulations from everyone here at the Grapevine.
