From Iceland — A Mountain Is Being Born On Fimmvörðuháls

A Mountain Is Being Born On Fimmvörðuháls

Published March 22, 2010

A new mountain is currently being born on Fimmvörðuháls. The accompanying pic was shot by Þorsteinn Jónsson of Lambey in the neighbouring Fljótshlíð area, and first published by MBL, as far as we can tell.
You should go look at Þorsteinn’s Flickr page for more shots of the fascinating event. Then you should read our volcanologist friend and man-on-the-scene James Ashworth’s new column, which is crammed with information and accompanied by pics he shot last night.
You should then resist the urge to come up with totally lame jokes connecting the eruption with Icesave and/or kreppa. This eruption is a beautiful event, and luckily no one is getting hurt or losing their home (knock on wood), so the proper reaction should be awe and contemplation and stuff.
Big big up to Þorsteinn for daring to venture close to the eruption so he could provide these breathtaking photos!
