From Iceland — Learn to Save Iceland

Learn to Save Iceland

Published July 9, 2009

Saving Iceland wants to teach you to … save Iceland through discussing direct action July 11th at Kaffi Rót. Titled “Climbing Cranes and Kleinur,” the meeting will begin at 18.00 and, if non-Icelanders are present, will be held in English to accommodate everybody. Kleinur will be served.
The meeting, another of which was held last night, is an introduction to Saving Iceland, the aluminium industry in Iceland and the industry’s role in the global context – how bauxite mining affects the local communities in which it is carried out. Touching upon the destructive nature of bauxite mining, the film “Mine: Story of a Sacred Mountain,” which examines the struggles of the indigenous peoples and mining of a holy mountain in Orissa, India, will be screened. Other films may be shown in conjunction with the guided discussion.
Kaffi Rót is located at Hafnarstræti 17 and more information on the Saving Iceland initiative can be found online at savingiceland.org.
