From Iceland — Icesave Protest Today

Icesave Protest Today

Published July 2, 2009

A protest demonstration against the Icesave deal will be held in front of parliament at 15:00 today. No determined time has been set for when the protest will end.
Already thousands of Icelanders have signed an online petition on the website kjosa.is, wherein the president of Iceland has been asked not to sign the Icesave deal into law, should parliament approve it. Also, MPs for the Progressive Party and the Civic Movement have submitted a resolution to parliament which would put the question of whether or not the government bears responsibility for the money Landsbanki owes Icesave customers up for referendum. The Minister of Finance has said a referendum on Icesave would not be as simple as that; that if the answer would be “No”, that there would then need to be alternatives to offer.
A recent Gallup poll has shown most Icelanders are against the Icesave deal.
