Icelandic composer Íris Thorarins releases the video to her latest art piece, “A Duet Of Distant Strings.” Described as a “musical dialogue,” the piece features the Chinese guzheng and viola in constant interplay, dotted with scenes of interpretive dance.

Íris’ journey with the guzheng began when she discovered one at an undisclosed farmhouse in Iceland. Covered in dust and missing strings, Íris started researching the curious instrument and teaching herself how to play. Ultimately, she found a local teacher to aid her in her studies, exploring how the instrument could fit into Íris’ Western musical background.

By mixing the two distinct instruments and snippets of her own voice, Íris creates a soundscape that immerses the listener. Augmented by scenes of interpretive dance by choreographer Íris Ásmundardóttir, the movements add deeper and emotive dimensions to the piece.
Íris Thorarins is set to release an album in 2026, continuing her discovery of the guzheng and its relationship with electronic arrangements. For updates and more information on the artist, follow Íris on her Instagram, Tiktok, or visit her website.

Recordings took place at Korpúlfsstaðir in collaboration with local artists and residents of Hafnar.haus. The video is shot by Patrik Ontkovic with Owen Hindley working on lights and installation. Joining Íris on the viola is Kristín Þóra Haraldsdóttir. The project is supported by Krómík Productions and the Association of Icelandic Visual Artists.
