Due to a misunderstood joke regarding a goldfish, Iceland’s female football team has been sued for animal abuse.
“They should practice their football skills rather than torture animals,” said Ludvig Lindström, Swedish animal rights activist in reaction to news of the death of Iceland’s mascot, DV.is reports.
The Icelandic team was competing in the Euro Cup being held in Sweden and its mascot, the goldfish Sigurwin (basically meaning Win-Win) had become quite popular in the Swedish media as the girls were tweeting photos of him. They carried Sigurwin with them everywhere in a large glass jar and
However, Iceland lost 0-4 and after the match one of the team members, Hallbera Guðný Gísladóttir, posted a photo of Sigurwin dangerously close to the toilet, with the caption: “This one’s going down the toilet. Bloody traitor.”
So animal rights activists in Sweden went berserk and Lindström’s animal rights organization GHO reported the girls for animal abuse, stating in a press release that their entire treatment of Sigurwin was a disgrace.
Sigurwin is however alive and well. “It was just a joke, I’d never treat animals badly,” Hallbera told visir.is. “Sigurwin is still alive but I’m probably on some black list in Sweden now. These Swedes have no sense of humour!”
