When searching for the Northern Lights by car, it’s still important to keep your eyes on the road.
Vísir reports that yesterday evening in Grindavík, two tourists were driving in the area on the search for Northern Lights. According to a police report on the incident, the driver decided to make a sharp U-turn in the middle of the road.
Another car, heading in the direction of the U-turning car, did not see the other vehicle until it was too late, colliding with the other car.
While the tourists came out of the accident unscathed, the other driver was taken to a local medical centre for further examination. Police report that there was considerable darkness on this stretch of road when the accident occurred.
If you are driving your own vehicle in search of the Northern Lights – as opposed to taking a group tour – have a passenger, or really anyone but the driver, keep their eyes open for Iceland’s trademark auroras. If you spot them, safely pull over and stay out of traffic while you take in the view.
