In the wake of the attacks in Brussels, the Icelandic police are weaponising at the country’s main international airport.
RÚV reports that the National Commissioner of the Police, in conjunction with the Chief of the Suðurnes Police, have decided to increase police armaments at Keflavík International Airport. This decision was made in direct response to the series of attacks which took place in Brussels this morning.
National Police Commissioner Haraldar Johannesen told reporters that while police do not see a reason to raise the terrorist threat level in Iceland at this time, they will be following developments in Brussels as they unfold.
Police at the airport will be assisted by Special Forces in maintaining an armed presence at the airport. They will also continue to be in contact with law enforcement in other countries.
What kinds of weapons the police will have, and what additional security measures – if any – that airport patrons may have to endure, has not been disclosed at this time.
