The Icelandic Naming Committee continues to reject names proposed by hopeful Icelanders, reports RÚV.
The latest round of names to get rejected were Zoe and Daniela which the Naming Committee contend are not in line with Icelandic naming tradition nor grammatically appropriate.
Even so, there are nine girls named Daniela in Iceland and seven women named Zoe, the oldest of which was born in 1979. The Naming Committee however, argue that this merely proves that the names Daniela and Zoe lack proper historical precedence.
Meanwhile, an increase in strong public support and government willingness could spell the end for Iceland’s notorious name laws. Last year, Interior Minister, Ólöf Nordal expressed a desire to do away with the strict naming laws altogether.
