Four out of five Icelanders feel good about tourists in Iceland, while only 7.5% had a negative opinion of them.
According to a new poll from Market and Media Research, 80% of Icelanders described themselves as viewing tourists in Iceland rather positively (46.9%) or very positively (33.1%). By contrast, 6.3% said they had a rather negative view of tourists, while only 1.3% said they viewed them very negatively. The remaining 12.5% of respondents had no opinion one way or the other.
By the demographics, men were slightly more likely than women to view tourists positively, and older people had marginally more favourable views of tourists than young people. Interestingly, the higher a respondent’s income level, the more likely they were to have a positive attitude about tourists.
Going by party affiliation, voters for the Progressive Party had the lowest levels of positive feelings about tourists, but they still comprised the majority, at 70.7%, and only 6.5% of Progressive voters view tourists negatively. Voters for the Independence Party had the largest margin of negative opinions of tourists, at 8.4%, but 85.6% of these voters view tourists positively. Voters with the most positive overall feelings about tourists were those for Bright Future – 89.6% said they viewed tourists positively, while only 4.6% had negative outlooks.
