The Pirate Party of Iceland wants to develop an independent body which would be tasked with supervising the police force.
Vísir reports that the Pirates have submitted the proposal to the Special Committee on the Standing Orders of Althingi, who would be tasked with drafting the bill for the supervisory office in question. If drafted and then passed into law, this office would be in charge of supervising the activities and practices of the police.
The proposed office would not only act on its own accord; it would also take complaints submitted by the general public from people who believe the police had acted outside the bounds of the law. In addition, it would also respond to complaints from within the police force itself, whether regarding other officers breaking the law, or acts of bullying and sexual harrassment.
If the Special Committee votes to draft a bill on such an office, the Pirates recommend that it be submitted to parliament no later than spring 2016.
