An employee of the Icelandic telecom Nova has been fired, suspected of abusing his access to sensitive data, but the case may reach farther than the company itself.
Vísir reports that the employee, who had access to and is suspected of misusing confidential financial information, has been fired while investigations are ongoing. Police are currently trying to determine whether or not the suspect distributed the information, and if so, how.
“We felt we had no other choice but to fire him,” Nova director Liv Bergþórsdóttir told reporters.
The case, however, apparently extends farther than Nova.
Police say the Nova employee is friends with another suspect, currently in custody, who is suspected of having broken into the police’s information system. The two, along with a third suspect, were all arrested shortly before Easter.
As it stands now, it is not believed that the Nova employee had access to nor distributed personal customer information – as a hacker had done to Vodafone last year.
