The capital has initiated an ambitious recycling project, inspired in part by smaller municipalites in the countryside.
Reykjavík has been a bit behind the times when it comes to recycling, even within a national context. RÚV reports that in Akureyri, for example, recyclables are separated into plastic, paper, paper containers, and metal. There have also been special containers for organic waste in Ísafjörður and other parts of Iceland.
As Grapevine reported, Reykjavík seeks to kick off an ambitious two-year recycling plan for the city. Guðmundur B. Friðriksson, the office manager of the environmental and traffic committee for the city, confirmed for RÚV what committee chairperson Karl Sigurðsson confirmed for Grapevine – that every city resident will get a special recycling bin for sorting items, later this year.
Guðmundur added that he does not believe the plan should raise garbage collection fees in the city. The city hopes that this will provide an economic incentive for city residents to sort their own recyclables.
