Whale watching season is now underway in Iceland, and many companies
are expecting record attendances brought on by the weakened crown.
The whale watching company Elding, which operates in the Reykjavík area, now has four boats at sea. Elding market director Eva María Þórarinsdóttir told RÚV that they’ve already seen growing attendance, and that Easter was a particularly busy time. Last year, Elding took 50,000 guests – 95% of them foreign tourists – on whale-watching tours. Þórarinsdóttir suspects that the weakened crown could lead to even more guests than that.
Important to keep in mind is that Elding is only one whale watching company, operating in the capital area. There are numerous other whale watching groups all around Iceland, especially in the northern town of Húsavík. The industry requires very little overhead and generates millions for Iceland every year.
