From Iceland — Much Air Traffic Around Iceland

Much Air Traffic Around Iceland

Published May 26, 2009

Hundreds of thousands of airline passengers have passed through Iceland in
the past year, having surprisingly positive effects on the economy even
from those passengers who never set foot in Iceland.
Morgunblaðið reports that on last Saturday alone, between the hours of 12:00 and 16:00, approximately 120,000 people passed through Iceland’s airspace. Air traffic through Icelandic airspace has increased by 5% in the past year – a total of 110,366 planes flew through here, averaging about 302 planes per day. 27.8% of those were planes arriving in or departing from Iceland.
It is estimated that this air traffic has contributed about 2.5 billion ISK to the national economy. Many are predicting – and many more are praying – that the weakened crown combined with summer holidays will result in record numbers of tourists this year.
