“In the continent of personal dreams that lie beyond the reality of the mirror stands a vast area of conflict, where the power of imagination rules and symbols really matter − symbols of good, symbols of evil, symbols of the sublime, symbols of the brutish.”
-From Jóní Jónsdóttir’s exhibition catalogue
On the 1st of July, the sixth private exhibition of the works of Jóni Jónsdóttir will open in Gallery Turpentine on Ingólfsstræti. Jóni Jónsdóttir’s photographs document the roots of myth, legend and fairy tales and their prominent position in the collective subconscious. Although a central member of the Icelandic Love Corporation, a trio of artists known for their surreal and eerie merging of delusional imagery with commonplace backdrops, Jóni has ventured out on her own lately, producing works that are often darker and more immersive than the primarily concept-based works of the ILC.
