Debut, Björk’s first solo album, was released 20 years ago today.
Initially, estimated sales of the album were 40,000 copies, journalist Michael Cragg at the Guardian reports, but three months from its release, 600,000 copies of Debut had been sold and the album had reached 3rd place on the UK Albums Chart.
Cragg mentions that not everybody were particularly impressed by the Sugarcubes frontwoman as a solo artist to begin with and that a critic at Rolling Stones had complained about her abandoning rock’n roll music and delivering instead something “painfully eclectic.”
Twenty years, can you believe it? Congratulations Björk!
