The 85th annual Academy Awards took place this past weekend in Hollywood, celebrating a year of cinematic achievements and the thespians who lend their talents to bringing stories to the silver screen.
While no 2012 Iceland films were up for an Oscar this year (though “The Deep” made the long-list for Best Foreign Film), the Icelandic box office was doing just fine, thanks, in part, to the success of two homegrown films, The Hollywood Reporter reports. Oskar Þór Axelsson’s “Black’s Game” and Baltasar Kormákur’s “The Deep” shared 10.5% of the box office in 2012. “Skyfall,” the latest installment of the James Bond films, was the biggest draw for Icelandic movie-goers, however.
While ticket revenue increased by 2.7% in 2012 – cinemas pocketed a whopping 1.5 billion ISK – the total tickets sold (1.4 million) dropped by 4.3%, according to the Iceland Film Centre. So, it looks like we all paid a lot more for movies in 2012 than we did the year prior.
