Salóme Hollanders puts warmth and comfort above all else

Welcome to The Haul, where we give you a peek into our shopping bag (or the shopping bag of someone far more interesting than us) and an idea of what’s worth browsing and buying in Reykjavík these days. This week’s haul comes from artist and designer Salóme Hollanders, known for her glazed mirrors, paintings, and installation works. Salóme’s practice is often defined by geometric abstraction, emerging at the intersection of fine art and design. She draws inspiration from the spaces in between, where structure meets softness.

1. Úr Hvalnum / Whale of a time by Karólína Rós Ólafsdóttir — A two-metre-long bilingual poetry book that folds up like a tiny harmonica. One side features poems in Icelandic and English, the other a hand-drawn whale created in a playful collaboration with artist Boaz Yosef Friedman. A blue strip representing the ocean holds it all together. Karólína wanted to show whales as gentle, friendly and mysterious. The work is beautiful, intriguing and magical! — 4.390 ISK, available at Skálda, Bók um bók, Garg and from Karólína herself

2. Karo Lina Pieces Earrings — These earrings are beautifully chic in their rawness. The way Karo manipulates materials allows roughness and softness to collide. — 25.900 ISK, available at Andrá

3. Guðrún & Guðrún “Bára” Wool Top — This simple yet beautifully crafted Faroese 100 percent merino wool top embodies both comfort and warmth. Two essential qualities, if you ask me — 14.900 ISK, available at Org and Húm Reykjavík

4. MOSI Icelandic Wool Pillow — I’ve tried this pillow, and now I want it desperately. I already have the Icelandic wool duvet from Lopidraumur and a wool mattress from Woolroom, and honestly, it has changed the way I sleep. I could not recommend it more. I’m obsessed! — 13.990 ISK, available at lopidraumur.is, Epal, Svefn & Heilsa, and other retailers

5. Scarpa Mojito Shoes — I’ve been eyeing these Scarpas for a while but still can’t decide on the colour. My parents had them when I was a teenager. I used to think they were the lamest thing imaginable. Now I love everything about them: practical, well-made, and the laces that run all the way to the front are just perfect. I’m slowly becoming my parents, and I kind of love that for me — 29.995 ISK, available at Fjallakofinn

6. Exit: The Secret Lab — Exit: The Game is another fall essential, a fun, collaborative puzzle experience where you and your friends (or enemies) must work together to escape from a mysterious setting. In this edition, it’s a secret lab! The only downside? You can only play each set once. But that just means there’s always a new challenge waiting. — 1.995 ISK, available at Nexus

7. Spiced Tuna Pâté — Pure bliss. Perfect on a cracker, on its own, or with tomato, cucumber, or avocado. Bonus points for the beautiful packaging, always a plus. — 579 ISK, available at Seiðkarlinn

8. Painting by artist Jón Sölvi — Jón Sölvi’s paintings have this magical seriousness to them. His colours and textures feel intentional. He often works with egg tempera and natural pigments. You can sense his integrity through his work, which, for me, is the most important thing when choosing art for my home — Prices vary, available directly through Jón Sölvi
