
On Wednesday, October 8, internationally renowned artist Björk expressed her support for Magga Stína, who was kidnapped by the Israeli Army in international waters.
Margrét Kristín Blöndal — Magga Stína — was onboard the Freedom Flotilla Conscience which was intercepted by Israeli authorities in international waters in the morning of October 8. Conscience was headed to Israel’s Ashdod port.
According to Magga Stína’s family, about 100 healthcare professionals, journalists and activists were onboard Conscience with the goal of delivering emergency care and supplies to Israeli-occupied Gaza.
Björk wrote the following statement on her Facebook page:
On their social media, the Icelandic Foreign Ministry claimed that they were aware of the situation and that they have communicated with Israeli authorities. In conversation with Vísir, Foreign Minister Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir said that Icelandic authorities emphasised its demands with Israel that the rights of Icelandic citizens should be respected in accordance with international law.
In June, 2025, the International Court of Justice condemned Israel’s continuous forced displacement of Palestinians and its attacks against civilians. Furthermore, the organisation urged Israel to allow unimpeded humanitarian aid to enter Gaza.
Earlier in September, Björk removed her music catalogue from streaming services in Israel as part of the protest initiative No Music For Genocide.
