The Blue Lagoon has reopened after being closed for over two weeks due to the volcanic eruption that started on November 20, reports RÚV.

The Blue Lagoon was evacuated when the eruption began at the Sundhnúkur fissure, and it remained closed until December 6. Lava flowed toward the lagoon, but protective barriers shielded the lagoon and surrounding infrastructure. However, the lava covered the parking lot and road leading to the lagoon, effectively blocking access.

In the meantime, all guests are transported to the Lagoon by buses from Grindavík, which takes about five to seven minutes.

“It must be acknowledged that there are many things to consider and a lot that needs to be solved, but everything has gone well so far,” says Helga Árnadóttir, Director of Sales, Operations and Services at the Blue Lagoon. “Of course, our staff is exceptional in participating in this with us, and the guests have shown great understanding.”

One of the two Blue Lagoon hotels, The Retreat, has also reopened opens, while work continues on reopening Silica Hotel. A new parking lot is expected to be ready by next weekend.

“We immediately started working on building a new parking lot, which will be constructed within the protective barriers. That work is underway, and we hope to have it ready by next weekend,” says Helga.

Losses reach billions

Since the Blue Lagoon first closed due to seismic activity in November of last year, it has been closed for a total of four months, or a third of the year. Helga says the losses are enormous. “The financial losses are in the billions, but for us, it’s crucial to keep the operation going, and we look to the future with optimism,” she said.
