Prime Minister Bjarni Benediktsson spoke with U.S. president-elect Donald Trump over the phone on Wednesday, reports RÚV.
During the call, the political leaders discussed the strong relationship between the two countries, trade and security and defence cooperation. The prime minister also emphasised continued support for Ukraine and exploration of ways to ensure lasting peace.
The discussion also highlighted the importance of NATO for security in the North Atlantic, including air policing missions conducted by the United States and other allied nations in close collaboration with the Icelandic government.
The Prime Minister also referenced international meetings hosted in Iceland in recent years and decades, including the 1986 Reykjavík Summit at Höfði. Both Trump and Bjarni Ben agreed that Iceland remains an excellent venue for such events.
Trump was reportedly enthusiastic about Iceland and its people during the call, sending his warm regards to the Icelandic nation. He is set to take office on January 20.
