A young Icelandic man who was questioned by the FBI when the agency paid an ill-fated visit to Iceland in 2011 (they were promptly asked to leave) is being sued by Wikileaks for fraud and theft.
The man, who was just 18-year-old when the FBI questioned him about Wikileaks’ operations in Iceland, stands accused of stealing funds raised through the sale of Wikileaks t-shirts, Vísir reports. After meeting Julian Assange in 2010 the man became a volunteer for the whistleblower organisation.
After a few months in late 2011 when the then teen was raising funds for Wikileaks it was discovered by Wikileaks staff in Iceland that he had been directing the funds into his own personal bank account, explained Kristinn Hrafnsson, Wikileaks spokesperson in Iceland.
“He was given the opportunity to repay the money over the span of a few months,” said Kristinn. “When the money was not repaid the case was reported to the police in March or April of last year, and that is where it is currently.”
The young man, whose name has not been released, is well known to police and has a history of theft and fraudulent activities.
