Early this morning, the capital area police department released a warning about dangerous road conditions. The icy roads are especially slippery in residential areas, and walking and cycling paths should also be approached with caution, Vísir reports.

Over the night, city employees have been working to clear major routes of ice and improve the safety of everyone who is leaving the house today. In a Facebook post, the police department further reminded drivers to take the time to remove all ice from their car windows before heading out and to keep a careful eye on pedestrians crossing the icy roads.

Pedestrians and cyclists are in turn recommended to dress in reflective outerwear. Now that the days are so short, this will make it easier to spot you in the dark and thus will increase your safety dramatically. Temperatures will stay below zero in the east and in many areas in the west today, so it remains important to be cautious when driving or walking. However, a warm pocket will hit Iceland over the weekend and increase temperatures to up to 8°C in the Reykjavík area, accompanied by rainfall.

In any case, always be sure and check the weather forecast as well as road conditions before hitting the road.
