There have been 37 murders committed in Iceland in the past twenty years, according to Minister of Justice Áslaug Arna Sigurbjörnsdóttir in Iceland, RÚV reports. It was Andrés Ingi Jónsson, member of parliament for the Left-Greens, who asked the Minister about the statistics.
It appears that most of the murderers in Iceland were connected to their victim as a friend or acquaintance. In nine occasions, the murderers killed their spouse. Of the 37 victims, 24 were male and 13 women.
Andrés Ingi also asked about the statistics related to domestic violence and the answer was that there were 606 cases connected to domestic violence from January to August, this year.
Most cases of domestic violence were in Reykjavík and neighbouring areas, or 467. Last year, there were 866 cases of domestic violence, thereof 702 in Reykjavík and neighbouring areas.
