Músíktilraunir 2019: Semi-Finals

What do Of Monsters And Men, Mammút, Vök and Jónsi in Sigur Rós all have in common? No, the answer is not that they’re all Icelandic (although that’s also true). The answer is that long before hitting the big time, they all participated in Músíktilraunir (Music Experiments). The annual competition is a beloved event on Iceland’s social calendar and has always been a magnet for Iceland’s best and most promising music talents before they become world famous. Although the evening is filled with unpolished diamonds, it’s also a great place to see what the youngsters are thinking about music-wise. So if you want to discover the next Sigur Rós, this is the place to be. If you can’t make it today, there will be another semi-finals on April 2nd and the finals (!!!) on April 6th.

Janice Kerbel

At this exhibit, check out Janice Kerbel’s large silkscreen prints of verbs and nouns strewn around like a portrait. These aren’t your average words though, Janice’s are pretty brutal ones. Think jab, grab, head butt, barge, and straddle. Oof, it’s a doozy. Also on display are large prints of synchronised swimmers—yes, they still exist—and so much more. While Janice Kerbel’s exhibit will be open from 11:00 to 18:00 today, i8 Gallery is open in general on Tuesdays to Fridays from 11:00 to 18:00 and Saturday from 13:00 to 17:00.

Grúska Babúska & MIMRA

Grúska Babúska is a four-piece, all female band with an outer space, wonky, electronic, synth, melodic, acoustic and twisted Icelandic fairytale sound. They’re pretty difficult to categorise, especially because they use flute, ukulele, synth, keyboard, guitar, melodica, music-box and all kinds of electronic vibes and beats to create their tunes. Yeah, super impressive. Joining them is electro-acoustic folk pop queen MIMRA. MIMRA just dropped her newest tune, ‘Vindurinn’, only days ago, so get ready to hear her gorgeous jazzy voice live. All hail MIMRA. See you there.

PlakATH!: Opening

Natka Klimowicz is an anarchist/activist artist that has made posters for Andrými, Róttæki Sumarháskólinn, Post-dreifing, and so much more. Here, she’ll throw them all together for an exhibit that’ll be sure to inspired some protests. Providing a delightful soundtrack for the event will be psychedelic space rock band Nornagal, who, we presume, are also anarchists. If that’s not enough, there will also be drinks and some light vegan refreshments. Down with the poster system.
