Vandals have graffitied “Fascists” on the facade of the Directorate of Immigration on Skógarhlíð 6, reports Vísir.

Passerby, Óskar Steinn Óskarsson, who took pictures of the graffiti told Vísir that he saw a car bolting from the scene and that its speed had piqued his curiosity. After some snooping he came across the graffiti and decided to snap some pictures.

The decision to deport a number of asylum seeking families with seriously ill children yesterday – on International Human Rights Day of all days – sparked strong criticism of the government including a petition calling for the resignation of Iceland’s Interior Minister, Ólöf Nordal. At time of writing the petition had already gathered over 5,600 signatures.

Icelanders across social media expressed anger and shame at the government’s actions yesterday and politicians from numerous parties have chimed in.

UTL has issued a statement saying the decision will not be reconsidered.
