Tourists numbering over four times the actual population of the country will have visited Iceland by the time the year is out, if all forecasts bear out.

Vísir reports that the Icelandic Travel Industry Association estimates that for 2015, this year will have seen a 30% increase in tourists since last year. All told, there will very likely be 1.3 million visitors to Iceland in 2015.

At the same time, the number of trips Icelanders took abroad is only a third of this, or about 448,000.

For the sake of comparison, in the 1990s, about 380,000 tourists came to Iceland each year, while Icelanders took about 225,000 vacations overseas.

It is predicted that tourist industry revenue will continue to increase during the last quarter of the year. All told, the industry brought in 368 billion ISK to Iceland in 2015 alone.
