A Kickstarter is underway to make beloved art house cinema Bíó Paradís completely wheelchair accessible.

At the time of this writing, the Kickstarter has already exceeded its goal of €30,000. All of the funds go to making extensive changes to both the exterior and the interior of the building, so that those using wheelchairs can access virtually every part of the cinema.

Amongst the changes to come are the following:

“This first phase includes building a permanent ramp into the main screening room as well as needed changes in the 210 seats auditorium. Furthermore, a ramp to the second floor ensuring proper access and building a new toilet with wheelchair access will be a part of this first phase, as well as few other smaller changes needed to take place to ensure proper access.”

Wheelchair access can be a tricky thing in Iceland’s capital. The island of Viðey, amongst other natural settings, is far from wheelchair accessible, and numerous establishments downtown provide their own mixed set of challenges to those in wheelchairs.

UPDATE: Their goal was reached.
