The contest for the Most Beautiful Word in Icelandic might be over, but the fun still continues.
A new contest is on to choose the ugliest word in Icelandic. The contest concludes this Saturday, when the winner will be announced and a prize – only specified as “something ugly” – will be awarded.
Of the hundreds of Icelandic words submitted, 15 were chosen for the final round of votes. They are as follows, with their English translations:
Gardína (Curtain)
Geirvarta (Nipple)
Hrææta (Carrion-eater)
Íðorð (Terminology)
Legslímuflakk (Endometriosis)
Líkþorn (Corn – the foot variety)
Mjöðm (Pelvis)
Mótþróaþrjóskuröskun (Oppositional Defiant Disorder)
Náriðill (Necrophiliac)
Ófrísk (Pregnant)
Slabb (Slush)
Verg (Gross)
Úlnliður (Wrist)
Þátttaka (Participation)
Þúsöld (Millennium)
Voting is being conducted in this gallery. To choose the word you feel is the ugliest, simply place a Like on it. The word with the most Likes will be deemed the ugliest in the Icelandic language.
According to an online survey conducted by DV, Náriðill is in the lead with just over 20% of the vote, followed by Líkþorn at 15.2% and Legslímuflakk at 14.3%.
Yesterday, the contest for the Most Beautiful Word in Icelandic concluded, with the winner being “ljósmóðir” (midwife).
