From Iceland — Spectacular Northern Lights Across Iceland

Spectacular Northern Lights Across Iceland

Published October 15, 2013

Vivid and spectacular Northern Lights could be seen in Reykjavík on Monday night, as well as in Akureyri in the north and Selfoss in the south.

Spectators sent photos to online media and it looks as if the sky was illuminated everywhere, even despite the light pollution in Reykjavík.

Photos from the Reykjavík area can be seen at Mbl.is and photos from Akureyri here.

The Icelandic Met Office predicts when and where there’s a good chance of seeing Northern Lights in Iceland, grading the Northern Lights visibility from 0 to 9, where grade 3 often proves spectacular if there’s no cloud cover.

However, meteorologist Óli Þór Árnason told Mbl.is that while the Aurora Forecast is pretty reliable, predictions of cloud cover are very delicate and not at all as trustworthy as the calculations are very complex and the technique to foresee cloud cover not as advanced as with other forecasts.

Spotting Northern Lights is therefore always a bit of a lottery.
