Tourists who are senior citizens do not receive the museum entrance discount that elderly Icelanders are granted.
RÚV reports that while Icelandic senior citizens are given free admission to Ásmundarsafn, Kjarvalsstaðir and Hafnarhúsið, foreign senior citizens receive no such discount. This is confirmed by visiting the webpages of the respective museums, where the admission prices differ between the Icelandic and English versions.
Hafþór Yngvason, the museum director, defended the practice, saying, “These are our pensioners, they’ve paid the price of admission all their lives and now they’re enjoying these [later] years. They have the time [to visit] and we wanted to give them the opportunity to do so.”
However, it is illegal by European law to charge different prices for goods and services based on the nationalities of the consumers. Hafþór said that in light of this, they will review their price of admissions, as the museum does not want to break the law.
