Capital area police have pledged more cops on bicycles this summer.

RÚV reports that Reykjavík police have introduced a new police bicycle (not shown above) to be introduced this summer. Capital area police also announced that they intend to increase the number of cops on bikes.

Police believe the move will help increase their visibility amongst the general public. The specially-designed bikes will also enable officers to travel faster over more areas than they would be able to on foot or in patrol cars.

Two police officers have already taken classes on riding a bicycle for the purpose of law enforcement. With the pledge to increase the number of cops on bikes, the number of officers trained in this skill may increase with them. No word yet on the use of segwayswhere the Reykjavík police are concerned, though.
