From Iceland — Karaoke For Nature Off To Great Start

Karaoke For Nature Off To Great Start

Published January 6, 2011

A karaoke marathon organised by artist Björk Guðmundsdóttir and others to drum up support for Icelandic natural resources in public ownership is apparently off to a fine start, and the signatures for the necessary petition are piling up fast.
The marathon, called “The Voice Of The People”, began today at 15:00, and opened with a duet between Björk and celebrated Icelandic personality Ómar Ragnarsson. The marathon’s purpose is to draw in more signatures on a petition, which can be found at orkuaudlindir.is, that states simply, “I, the undersigned, demand the government prevent the sale of HS Orka and furthermore that parliament allow a national referendum to be held on ownership of natural resources and their use.”
Vísir reports that the signatures are coming in fast. The goal is 35,000 signatures – about 10% of the population – and right now that figure is at about 20,000.
Organisers of the event encourage everyone to participate, be they professional singers or total amateurs who haven’t sung beyond the shower. The marathon is open to the general public, although some famous names are already participating, among them Páll Óskar, Ólafur Stefánsson, Ragnhildur Gísladóttir, and Hilmar Örn Hilmarsson.
The marathon will be held every day from 15:00 until midnight, today, tomorrow and Saturday at the Nordic House.
