From Iceland — Conservatives Still Going Strong

Conservatives Still Going Strong

Published January 2, 2012

The Independence Party is still polling at pre-crash levels, according to the latest Gallup poll, with support rising for only one party: The Movement.
RÚV reports that the Independence Party is still polling at 38%, just as they had in the previous poll, when their approval rose to levels not seen since before the autumn 2008 financial collapse, which occurred when they led the government.
Support for nearly every other party remained relatively the same as well. The Social Democrats saw a modest dip from 22% to 21%, while the Leftist-Greens remain at around 14%. Support for the Progressives was at about the same percentage as well.
The only party which saw any significant rise in support was The Movement, moving from 2% to 3% – which would still not be enough to earn them a seat in parliament.
There still remains a voter vacuum for a new party to fill. 10% said they intended to vote for another party, 15% declined to participate in the poll or reveal who they intended to vote for, and 16% said they would submit a blank ballot or forgo voting altogether if elections were held today.
