From Iceland — UNICEF To Establish Child Violence Monitoring System In Iceland

UNICEF To Establish Child Violence Monitoring System In Iceland

Published March 7, 2013

Representatives of UNICEF in Iceland have announced that they are working toward establishing a council tasked with keeping a record of violence against children in Iceland and coordinate efforts to reduce such instances, RÚV reports.
Representatives of UNICEF presented a new report on Morgunútvarpinu  this morning outlining ways of combating violence against children, touching upon the lasting impact of child violence, and making recommendations for improving the situation in Iceland.
“This is probably the most sensitive issue that can be addresses, but we have to face it, we have to take it on,” said UNICEF Iceland director, Stefán Ingi Stefánsson. “It is important for us to understand the nature and scale of violence in Iceland so that we can respond and try to reduce it. That way we are not ill prepared to face the problem. This is not something natural that we can accept; there are ways to reduce the violence.”
UNICEF’s report on child violence in Iceland is available to read online (PDF link, Icelandic only).
