Few spots in Iceland are as iconic, as easily recognisable and emblematic of Iceland as Geysir. Tens of thousands visit this spot every year, and for good reason. Just a stone’s throw from the majestic falls of Gullfoss, Geysir regularly erupts, presenting a stunning display that belies the powerful geological forces at work. In this video, you’ll take a virtual trip to Geysir—hovering high above it and walking its surroundings. But nothing beats a trip to the real thing, so be sure and pay a visit soon.

Below, you can read the personal testimonies of people who visited and work at Geysir themselves on why this is such a national treasure.

What brings you here to Iceland?: “It was always a dream for me ever since I was young,” Jade explains. “I love this land. The nature. And I like to go horseback riding, so it’s perfect for me.”

How do you like Geysir?: “The geysir does not smell good,” she laughs. “But it’s amazing to see nature. And it’s a unique sight. We never see this anywhere else in the world!”

Names: Nigel, Katie, Ben & Jenny

From: U.K.

What brings you out to Iceland?: “I always wanted to come, so they said we’ll come with you, and that was it,” Jenny says. Ben nods. “We’re doing a road trip,” he continues. “We’re going to ride around and then go into the highlands. We’re doing the Golden Circle today and tomorrow, but then we’re going to go up to the north and go into the highlands and then back into the south.”

What do you think of the area?: “I think it’s fantastic!” Jenny says. “This is the first time we’ve been here, so we weren’t really sure what to expect in terms of infrastructure and walking paths and that sort of stuff,” Ben interjects. “But it seems to be really good.” Katie agrees. “They’ve got good paths laid out, and in the National Park they had good paths as well,” she explains. “I couldn’t find a map of anywhere before we went, but then we got there, and there were all sorts of nice trails.”

Meet a local!

Name: Halla Rós

From: Iceland

Occupation: Efstidalur

What would you recommend for visitors to do when visiting the area?: “Well there’s my place, Efstidalur, of course,” Halla laughs. “But there are many nice restaurants with local foods and local owners. We are so lucky in the Golden Circle because it’s easy to purchase produce. It’s also wonderful to go horseback riding, either on my farm or with other farmers in the area. For many, the highlight is to go horseback riding.”

When is the best time to see Strokkur?: “Any time of year is great,” Halla explains. “In my opinion, it’s just in a different costume with every season. Some people might like to go see it at night with the Northern Lights in the background, though.”

How do you like working in tourism?: “I absolutely love it. I’ve been doing it for 21 years, so I don’t know anything else,” she says, smiling. “But I love having all kinds of different people from different backgrounds and different cultures visit my farm.”
