Iceland Airwaves isn’t just a music festival, it is an endurance sport. The events are: drinking, seeing music, dancing, playing music (if you are), finding your friends, getting your friends to go where you want to go (“herding cats,” for short), eating, pulling, sleeping (or not), talking, and walking. By day four if you’re awake at 10:30am and in Laugardalslaug for a subcategory of events, sports, you’re doing well. Or you’re sleep deprived and just hoping that geothermal seawater has the capacity to work miracles.
By far the best thing I saw Saturday night was Bo Ningen. I haven’t been stuck into a mosh pit since Primus circa 1994. Its been too long. But I had heavy equipment so I cut out to the back after shooting the hell out of that amazing band. kimono was rawer than the night before, and more than filled the spaces in the room. Cell7 killed it despite the bass in the system being totally farty at times. She stopped and asked the sound guy and the audience but nothing was done. I would have insisted if I were stood back by him. It didn’t matter, she still killed it. I can’t wait to hear the new stuff again. Sísý Ey took half the set to get their groove set but thanks to a woman named Sóley who came in and got everyone off the floor dancing, the vibe turned around and the last half of the set had me dancing more than photographing.
